Decking Melbourne

An independent journal of timber, weather and outdoor rooms

About the journal

Decking Melbourne is an independent long-form journal about decks in Melbourne. We write for people who are about to spend serious money on timber, or who already have a grey, slippery platform they do not quite trust. The old site at this domain was a local decking guide; Wayback snapshots were not reachable when we rebuilt it, so we kept the niche implied by the name and rebuilt the publication as a proper editorial title.

We are not a contractor, a lead-gen desk or a product shop. We do not install decks. When a piece mentions a brand, a council form or a trade, it is because the reader needs the name, not because someone bought the sentence. Paid or guest-post links, if we ever carry them, are marked rel="sponsored" and disclosed on the page. Read the editorial standards and the write-for-us guidelines if you want to contribute.

Melbourne is a hard climate for outdoor timber: a wet, dark winter, a sharp summer, and a week in November that can do both before lunch. Species that behave in Brisbane or Perth do not always behave here. Our beat is that gap — merbau and spotted gum, composite in a Victorian winter, BAL ratings on the fringe, body-corporate balconies in the inner north, and the unglamorous work of falls, flashing and oil.

Who writes

The desk is small on purpose. Pieces are reported from Australian Standards, the National Construction Code as adopted in Victoria, council planning schemes, and conversations with builders and homeowners. We use Australian English throughout.
